Use of media, Stuart and the Oz land song

Updated: May 28, 2020

Today, Tuesday 02/27/2018, we recapitulated a few things from the last lesson. It looked like almost every lesson, everyone was just nodding to make our professor sure that we do remember something but not so many to repeat it.

After 30 seconds of spiritless nodding, we started the lesson, which was about how to audience use media. For entertainment, for fun, or to gain some knowledge, or to see news and what is new in the world or their neighborhood. This is for everybody different, everyone can find something different what does he likes or dislikes on some show, news or film, but also there is one thing in common that have every single one consumer of a tv broadcasting - he wants to achieve something that he can't get without television. For example for me it could be leaving this boring and full of responsibilities world as getting into a clash with nasty orgs and mighty power of almost raised lord of darkness alongside my honest and loyal friends especially one border guard with blue blood, blond haired and spiky eared archer and one small friendly guy with an axe. All together under the bright light of a good warlock with white name, as white as his beard and soul is, Gandalf the white. Hopefully, Frodo will be soon in the Mountain of fate to destroy the ring and we will all get home to our families. And our cosy fur slippers.

Anyway there was one beautiful example which includes all of five statements, the football match - we are watching it because we want to know how it will end and how does the whole league go, we can identify our selves with some players or trainers, maybe somebody with referees. We just simply enjoy the game, after the match another day at work, at school or in the elevator we can talk about the match, who was the best one, who was the most aggressive one, who fired out most of the chances to score a goal and while we are watching we don't usually care much about other things. We just want to enjoy the atmosphere and the beautiful moment of the game.

Then we leave this thing and moved to another one, especially to one person, to Stuart Hall and his model of communication-based on encoding and decoding messages. The whole process of communication has many and many angles that we can look at it from, now we are talking about sending and receiving messages. When we want to give somebody any information we have to encode the message that means that we are transforming the message into codes as verbal (words, signs, icons) and nonverbal (body language, hand gestures) symbols. We have to be really careful in the process of encoding, in this process we should know all the meanings of the message, because there can happen that problem as a wrong decoding of the message and whole bad understanding which can sometimes lead to not so comfortable situations. Also, we have to keep in our mind the source of sending a message, we have to take into account all aspects that can somehow distract our message and avoid them. I like this guy because he did not try to destroy all other theories of communication, he just took some things which he was familiar with and then he just used them in his own theory or model. And of course, because he is right and I fully agree with his words and thoughts. For example, we can say something common as is a good morning, this phrase could be understood at least in 3 ways. First one - this morning is really nice because of weather, second - it's just a common phrase which doesn't mean anything but it better just to say hello, third - we wish you to have a good morning in the case you didn't have good morning so after our meet you will have a better morning, another one is that we have a good morning and we want to share our happiness with y

"Somewhere over the rainbow", yeah, at first I've thought that is the one famous song from famous big singer Israel Kamakawiwoolea, but no o, it ain't this one. This one is the original one written for well known old tale The Wizard of Oz, which I have to see this week, I haven't done it yet. The lyrics are about the better world over the rainbow, where things are more colorful and dreams really do come true. In The Wizard of Oz this song sings one little girl, named Dorothy, which lives with her aunt and uncle on a ranch somewhere in America and she isn't satisfied, she is dying desire to explore new places and see new things however since she gets there, to new places she so wanted to see, she wants to go home, back to her uncle and aunt. The year of producing this tale and song is 1939, which is a year of the Second world war and there appear some theories of more meanings of words in this song. Somebody said that it was for American soldiers abroad to keep their faith still strong, another one said that this song has some hidden meaning related to holocaust and the Jewish community, because of the lyrics about better world and fulfilled dreams, but who knows what author wanted to say, only him knows, but we will not and we can't ask him any more, because Harold Arlen passed away in 1986, may he rests in peace, by the way he was Jewish so who knows.

The lesson was nicely led as usually and I am completely deprived to say anything against or something I didn't agree with.

Double underlined A plus
